Not since the Jeep of the Second World War has there been such a much-loved workhorse as the HMMWV. Production of the basic M998 began in 1985 and by the time the M998A1 series was started in 1993, more than 100,000 had been produced. There are now more than 150,000 worldwide.
The Hummer is a tough, versatile vehicle designed to take several different weapons and be used in many different roles. It is a cargo and troop carrier, TOW missile carrier, an armament carrier, it can be an ambulance with two or four stretchers, a soft top ambulance with two stretchers, a shelter carrier, air defence vehicle, or a prime mover. It can be a soft-skinned vehicle, have basic armour or supplemental armour. AM General, which manufactures the Hummer, produces versions with many different weapon systems.
Apart from the .50 cal M2, Mk 19 grenade launcher and TOW which are available with our models, the Hummer can be fitted with the M106 recoilless rifle, .50 cal three-barrel Gatling gun, a 20mm or 30mm cannon, Milan, or TOW II anti-tank systems, 5.56 and7.62 machineguns, and anti-aircraft systems like Mistral and Starburst. The Boeing Avenger version uses Stinger missiles as an air defence system. Hummers have been sold to more than 30 different countries, many of which use it as the basis for their own weapon systems. Such is the versatility of the Hummer that it can be air transported (three in a Hercules, six in a Starlifter or 15 in a Galaxy) or deployed by low altitude air drop, or slung under helicopters – the Chinook Super Stallion can take two, and the Black Hawk one.
